First 8 Weeks

and just like that, the first eight weeks of my doctoral program are nearing its end. As I look back on everything that I’ve read and digested, I feel empowered to tackle what lies ahead.  Do I need a doctorate? What type of coursework will there be? How enjoyable will it be to write a dissertation? These were just some of the questions that I’ve been asking myself over and over again since I attained my masters degree.

Even with those questions, I always do this was a journey that I HAD to embark on.  What I needed was the right timing.  I kept putting it off because I thought that I needed my life to look a certain way.  Thankfully I got over that, enrolled and here we are. But interstingly enough what I have learned so far has been EXACTLY what I needed in my life right now.  The first course, Doctoral Seminar I, contained assigned readings that were really in-tune to  with the kind of information I needed.  Identity, being purposeful, goal setting, planning and organizing, looking at ways to remain successful. I expected to have tons of reading and writing, but having that reading and writing provide a much needed foundation – I couldn’t have done this at any other time in my life than right now.

The assigned readings were tremendously beneficial to my growth.  Learning how to form new habits (the right kind of habits) and habit stacking are two fundamentals that are leading the pack when it comes to the assigned readings that made a big impact.  I am confident that this first course was design to ensure my success.  Tomorrow my residency begins and I am eager to meet the members of my cohort in person and to delve into the different topics that will be presented this week.  This is where my curiousities lie, how many of my peers actually know what the would write their dissertation on?  Will I hear something this week that will lead me down the right path for what mine will be about?  Am I as good of a formal writer as I am a blogger (tootin’ my own horn to say I am a good blogger – LOL).
